A Herxheimer reaction is a type of "die off" reaction experienced by patients undergoing treatments for specific spirochetal infections. These days is often used more broadly to describe any type of uncomfortable reactions in response to killing pathogens and eliminating toxins. These are also known as herxing, vital reactions, treatment reactions, or symptom flares.
