The Golden Eagle Nugget is one of Western Australia’s most famous gold discoveries. Unearthed in January 1931 by 16-year-old Jim Larcombe near Widgiemooltha, it weighed an astonishing 1,136 ounces (about 35 kilograms), making it the largest nugget ever found in the state. Its name came from its striking resemblance to a golden eagle with outstretched wings. The find created huge excitement during the Depression era, drawing prospectors and media attention from across the nation. Sadly, like many great nuggets, the Golden Eagle was later melted down, but its legacy remains a legendary part of Australia’s rich gold mining history.
